Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

In November 2008 at
Meadowvale Theatre, Mississauga.

Book by Hugh Wheeler, Lyrics and Music by Stephen Sondheim.
Performed with permission of MTI.

Sweeney Todd is a dark tale of crime and punishment, revenge and death, set in 19th century England. The woeful story of Sweeney Todd begins when he returns to London from which he was banished some fifteen years ago.
He once lived happily as a barber with his beautiful wife Lucy and his child Johanna; alas, Lucy was coveted by a richer, more powerful man of the law - Judge Turpin. Sweeney is framed and deported, his wife dishonoured and apparently dead, his child made captive.
Having lost all he loved, Sweeney is bent on a unique revenge which he enacts with the help of the immoral Mrs. Lovett. He uses his skill with the razor to become a murderer of men, and his victims are disposed of by Mrs. Lovett in her meat pies.
Sondheim's music is one of his most complex to date, relying heavily on counterpoint and harmonies… (The Ballad of Sweeney Todd , A Little Priest, City On Fire).
Winner of several Tony Awards for best musical, best book of a musical and best original score, and recently restaged on Broadway and made into a film, (featuring Johnny Depp), Clarkson Music Theatre looks forward to the challenge of introducing this dark tale to our patrons at Meadowvale Theatre
